Helping Seniors Stay Connected while Living at Home -- When you imagine yourself getting older - where do you envision yourself living? In a retirement facility or in your own home?

The gift of Joy -- Many studies and articles have been written discussing the benefits to seniors using technology.  When thinking about purchasing a computer or technology gift for a loved one, we envision the many ways they might enjoy using it.   

A tribute to my Mother -- This will be my first Mother's Day without my mom, Janet. She was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2006 and, over the years, she had experienced the physical and cognitive issues that affect patients with PD. As her illness progressed, she couldn't do many of the things she always loved to do.

The Sound of Connection -- A noted composer once said that music opens up the window to the soul.  But for independently living seniors, being able to keep music in their lives can benefit the mind as well. The links between musical training and improved brain aptitude are already well-documented. Children and young adults who practice music, whether they are part of a school orchestra, a chorus or even a garage band, demonstrably experience elevated levels of attention and memory compared with before they began. Their training is shown to improve hearing and even, in some instances, motor skills.  Meanwhile, studies in recent years suggest that simply listening to music can provide a variety of health benefits–emotional, psychological and even physical–in the life of an older person who lives alone.For seniors, music can provide a powerful and easily recognized link to the past.  Listening to songs one heard long ago often helps to bring back dormant memories from his or her younger years. Such stimuli can also help seniors contextualize their memories. 

For some, the digital divide simply needs a translator -- Speaking English comes very natural to most of us. But let us face it; we have had many years of practice in learning how to get our points across. Ordering coffee on our way to work, relaying messages to our co-workers or debating today’s current events with our friends are all fairly simple tasks.

Four nurses from the Bucks and Montgomery, PA counties were honored for their commitment to the field at a ceremony held at Gwynedd Mercy University on May 5^th. Kristin Butler, RN; Giselle Knoblauch, RN, MSN, CS; Linda Gottlieb, RN; and Elicia Jackson, RN were presented with the Nursing Excellence Award for going above and beyond what is expected in their profession.
