Telikin The Sound of Connection: How Music Can Sharpen the Minds of Seniors

Category: Aging

Happy-Couple-smallThe Sound of Connection -- A noted composer once said that music opens up the window to the soul.  But for independently living seniors, being able to keep music in their lives can benefit the mind as well. The links between musical training and improved brain aptitude are already well-documented. Children and young adults who practice music, whether they are part of a school orchestra, a chorus or even a garage band, demonstrably experience elevated levels of attention and memory compared with before they began. Their training is shown to improve hearing and even, in some instances, motor skills.  Meanwhile, studies in recent years suggest that simply listening to music can provide a variety of health benefits–emotional, psychological and even physical–in the life of an older person who lives alone. For seniors, music can provide a powerful and easily recognized link to the past.  Listening to songs one heard long ago often helps to bring back dormant memories from his or her younger years. Such stimuli can also help seniors contextualize their memories.

Baby-at-laptop-2For some, the digital divide simply needs a translator -- Speaking English comes very natural to most of us. But let us face it; we have had many years of practice in learning how to get our points across. Ordering coffee on our way to work, relaying messages to our co-workers or debating today’s current events with our friends are all fairly simple tasks.

Telikin Pew Research study indicates many seniors are still reluctant to go digital

Category: General

Senior Woman Smiling TelikinPew Research study indicates many seniors are still reluctant to go digital - A recent Pew Research Internet study: Older Adults and Technology Use published findings last April that should come as no surprise: Those aged 65 and over, on average, lag the rest of the U.S. population in adopting new technologies into their daily lives.

Even though U.S. seniors who access the internet — now 60% — grew by six percentage points over last year ‘s statistics, according to the study, the wiser among us still trail the 86% of all adults who state that they engage in online activity.

Here at Telikin, we are aware of the challenges the senior community faces when deciding whether or not to step foot into the digital world. And regardless if you or a loved one have a physical ailment that limits your use of a traditional computer or you simply are intimidated by the learning curve that must be overcome in order to learn how use and enjoy a computer, you can rest assured that we have gone to great lengths to design a computer with you in mind.
