The award is sponsored by Fred Allegrezza, Co-founder of Telikin Computers and his wife Nancy. Fred’s relationship with Nancy, who is an RN and has over 30 years’ experience in the field of nursing, led him to develop a special appreciation for the profession as he witnessed the many rewards and challenges these professionals faced in their daily lives.

“Often nurses do not get the recognition they deserve and yet they are an integral part of the health care system,” Fred Allegrezza said.  “They make a great difference in the lives of patients and their families every day.”

In an effort to acknowledge and celebrate the dedication and contributions of nurses, Fred and Nancy established the Nursing Excellence Awards in 2001. The awards are managed by Gwynedd Mercy University’s Frances M. Maguire School of Nursing and Health Professions. Award recipients are employed in a variety of practice areas, including acute care settings such as hospitals, long term care, school nursing, home care and academic settings and are nominated by their colleagues for providing extraordinary service to patients, families and the community.

Outstanding nursing performance occurs every day in communities.  However, the exemplary nurse nominees excel in each of the following areas of practice:

  • Commitment to the highest standards of nursing---demonstrates excellence in all aspects of their position in their respective areas
  • Commitment to the Nursing Profession---raises awareness of and contributes to the nursing profession, for example, by participating in professional organizations and associations, or by promoting nursing in the community
  • Commitment to professional growth---seeks opportunities to increase their knowledge and skills to meet future challenges of their position
  • Commitment to mentoring colleagues---seeks opportunities to assist colleagues in developing their skills and knowledge
